Just stumbled across your page. Would love to see more information on the family trees. My grandad (William Henry Jellis) was born at Kiln Farm, Steplingley - 1920. We're all still local.

Message:Hello, I am the granddaughter of Alfred Jellis....he was a gardener for Rothchild's Halton Mansion which was turned over to the R.A.F at the beginning of WW2. His nickmame was JED and was respected in the village of Buckland, where he lived with his wife May Eliza, nee Bishop at 3 New Road. They had three girls, Irene born 1937, Olive Sybel, born 1930..and Isabel Freda born 1933. Alfred also kept at least two allotments kept at the bottom of the top end of New Road..now built over I believe, and fantastic gardens to the rear of his house in New Road. Going from the Church end towards Aston Clinton, the first of the semi detached houses, including number 3, lived the Cocherain family, then to their right, The Phelp's, who moved later to the newer houses at the Aston Clinton End of New Road and then my grandparents, Jed and May with their three girls. I cannot remember the neighbours further down the road. As a child, right up until 1971, when my Gran left to live in Wendover, after Alfred (Jed) dying the year before of lung cancer..he smoked from a young age...New Road, was new in name only...it was dreadfully maintained and huge dips, holes and puddles would appear, wonderful for me and my cousins to splash in!! It was a private road, and as a tenant...Alfred would only fill the deepest rut!! His gardens were a wonder...every gras pathway was immaculately mowed...no daisies allowed...we were paid sixpence to pick any on our visit..my gran would have egg cups full of them on her shelves all over the house...by the time we said goodbye..they always had wilted sadly...to see us go...we thought!!
My grandparents worked very hard..my gran worked in service for the Parson in the Vicarage. After she married Alfred, she took in washing, worked as a cook at Aston Clinton girls school...no mixed then, cooked and cleaned for the richer folk. However, lack of formal education did not hold back Alfred's and May's pride in their status as "good" people, both holding great respect from their peers and gentry alike for excellent quslity in work and deed. I have many stories I could tell you. I will end with a sad one...Alred had inherited Huntington's Disease from his Mother or father...this is a very unkind neuro-degenerative disease...effecting the menta/ personality and massive physical "chorea" as the disease progresses. All three of his daughters grew to middle age and started showing symptoms...I too have inherited it from my Mum Isabel aka Freda Jellis..she kept her maiden name after her divorce. She is the only survivor now..however Alfred and May had 13 grandchildren, including me..and their genes continue to descend. Alfred@s father was a miller in a nearby village..my Mum traced Jellis coming down as millers from the 17th century...sadly, as far as she could see, none of them were land or mill owners. Best wishes..Sue.

Message:My grandfather was Bernard jellis, born I think, in 1923. We think his father (my grandfather possibly named frederick) was a blockmaker for the hat industry. We also think he may have been from flitwick and lived in luton for a period of time. Have you come across any information relating to either? Thankyou. amy.
